The way I see it, art and design are closely related and balance one another. The boundaries that separate the two are often blurred or overlap. Both focus on creativity, imagination, and craft. They complement each other: art is focused on aesthetics, emotion, or an expression of ideas, beauty, or feelings; design is primarily about providing functionality and practical solutions, but should also be engaging, thoughtful, and visually pleasing.
Some say the two are diametrically opposed, but maybe another way of looking at it is that they’re complementary, two sides of the same coin. Design is more effective when supported by compelling art. Art that applies design principles—contrast, balance, and proportion among others—is more successful. That’s my perspective anyway.
